A brief History of Sierra Leone:

Transatlantic Slave Trade

In the 1462s, Portuguese explorers were the first Europeans to arrive in Sierra Leone.  They initiated trade as well as the sale of slaves.

British merchants joined the slave trade in the 1600s, using Sierra Leone as a key point for capturing and transporting enslaved Africans to the Americas.

Bunce Island, Banana Island, Sherbro Island and the village so Kent and York served as key ports for the transport of enslaved Africans across the Atlantic.

Colonization

In 1787, the British established a settlement for freed slaves in Freetown, as a home for freed slaves that had fought for the British in the American Revolutionary War (17775-1783).

1792: Approximately 1,200 Black Loyalists from Nova Scotia, who had been promised freedom and land for their support during the American Revolutionary War, were resettled in Freetown.

In 1800, Jamaican Maroons, who rebelled against the British were also resettled in Freetown.

In 1808, Sierra Leone became a British Colony.

On April 27, 1961,  Sierra Leone gained independence from Britain, becoming a sovereign nation under Prime Minister Sir Milton Margai.
